The types of resins used in waterborne coatings are basically similar to those of plastics, fibers, rubber and adhesives, but most of them are thermoplastic polymers with low molecular weight. Because coatings are a multi-component system, resins for waterborne coatings should have the following properties.
1. Good solubility. Because of the need of coating preparation and construction, the resin must be able to dissolve in the common solvent used in the coating.
2. Good miscibility. It is required that the resin can be well miscible with other film-forming substances commonly used in coatings to form transparent films, so that they can cooperate with each other, learn from each other's strengths and make up for their weaknesses.
3. Resins must have good film-forming properties (such as adhesion, leveling, etc.) and wettability to pigments, as well as certain protective and decorative properties (such as gloss, hardness, elasticity, water resistance, weather resistance and chemical resistance) to coatings.
4. Good stability. Resin is required to deteriorate for half a year or more during storage.
